LionLife is a life insurance company that has been black owned for over 99 years. The company was founded in 1923, as the APO Burial Society.  APO Vice President, Stephen Reagon, started the burial society to save black and coloured people in the Cape Province from the indignity of a pauper’s burial.

APO Burial Society outlived the political party as well as the APO Building Society that was started in 1919.

In 2002, Commlife Holdings purchased the burial society and changed its name to Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company Limited.

Commlife Holdings, itself is a 100% black owned investment holding company started in 1990, with interests in insurance, fund management, property and insurance broking.

In 2020, we changed our brand and name to LionLife, as the company gears itself towards a post-Covid world.
